Krug Grande Cuvée is born from the dream of one man, Joseph Krug, to craft the very best Champagne he could offer, every single year. So, each edition is very carefully put together from the very best Grand Cru vineyards and reserve wines, including this - the 171st Edition of Krug. Fermented in small, old oak barrels, it has intoxicating nutty spiced-apple aromas, is perfectly balanced and buttery fine with decadent golden bubbles. My brother and I (Remi) still manage this famous old House and it is we who maintain the extraordinary standards laid down by our ancestors. Everything here is special. From our use of ancient wooden casks to ferment our wines, to the extremely long period of time (ten years is not unusual) before our vintage wines are released. Nothing but absolute perfection can be accepted by Krug. It never has been and never will be.
"Krug Grande Cuvée 171ème Édition was composed around the harvest of 2015, a year marked by unprecedented heat and drought that prevailed from the end of May to mid-August, slowing grape development. Fortunately, rains in the second half of August allowed the berries to grow and, combined with sunshine and reasonable temperatures, ensured ripening in optimal conditions. The harvest took place between August 31 and September 21, under the rain, with great heterogeneity from plot to plot. To create this Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée, the Cellar Master looked to accentuate the year's elegantly diverse aromatic expressions with different plots' reserve wines from 11 other years. The careful attention given to the vines and Krug's unique respect for the individual character of each plot enabled the breadth of expression of this Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée. In all, reserve wines from the House's extensive library made up 42% of the final blend, bringing the breadth and roundness so essential to each Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée. The final composition of this bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée is 45% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay and 18% Meunier." - Olivier Krug, Winemaker.
