A naturalist winemaker and amateur entomologist, Eric Leglise has always had a real passion for solitary bees. Little known to the general public, there are almost 1000 species, which do not live in colonies and do not produce honey, yet are essential for plant pollination. Nearly 200 species are found in the vineyards of Château le Coteau. This collection has been created out of a desire to help visitors discover the world of bees. Each vintage has its own bee and food plant. Eucera is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, picked at optimum ripeness and vinified in new 500-litre barrels. Gently hand-picked, these grapes gradually release the best of the terroir in which they were born. Once the wine has finished fermenting in barrels, a gentle, respectful ageing process takes place over 18 months before the wine is bottled.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Eric Leglise
Château Le Coteau is one of the last family estates from the prestigious Margaux appellation and has been in the family for 6 generations. Since 1973, winemaker and esteemed oenologist, Eric Leglise, has been in charge of the estate, working with both passion and humility. Aware of his ancestor’s work and the singularity of this terroir, Eric always applies methods which respect the environment.
"The male Eucera is easily recognizable by its long antennae. It is a bee which appears at the beginning of spring and which thrives in meadows where it finds flowers with deep corollas, which it particularly likes. The widespread practice of early mowing has led to its decline. We are committed to preserving its environment and have the pleasure of frequently encountering it in our vines on fumitory, vetches or grape hyacinths." - Eric Leglise, Winemaker.
