The Wine The Wine
France
Region:Rhône - Côte-Rôtie
Made from the iconic northern Rhône blend of predominantly Syrah, with a small amount of Viognier to lift the aromatics. The vines are carefully grown on steep hillsides, yielding very low volumes of fruit, of which only the best quality grapes make to the winery. It is then expertly crafted, being fermented and aged in French oak barrels for 24 months before release, during which time the wine develops its spicy oak aromas and evolves complexity. This combination of superb quality grapes and phenomenal winemaking means that you get rich, sweet fruit which is both dense and meaty on the nose, with notes of olive and spice. It is warm and ripe on the palate with raspberry and black cherry as well as having a distinct mineral dimension and exactly the right measure of savoury tannins.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Etienne Beguin
Domaine de Bonserine is a 10.5-hectare estate, making it the second largest in the appellation. The terroir is mostly steep hillsides with iron-rich schist and mica soils. All their work in the vineyard is done on a sustainable farming basis. No chemicals, pesticides or herbicides of any type are ever used.
"This wine expresses itself on notes of jammy fruit, sweet spices, sprinkled with touches of violet. The tannins are silky and crunchy and invite you to sit down at the table with game birds or a nice piece of beef." - Etienne Beguin, Winemaker.
