The Wine

Country of origin:

USA

Region:

Washington State

Powers Champoux Vineyard Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is a single-vineyard wine from within Horse Heaven Hills. In fact, Champoux is regarded as one of the top ten vineyards of Washington State. Dating back to the 1970s, it was planted mainly with Cabernet by its previous owner, with the specific aim of matching the greatest wines of Bordeaux. Although not certified, it has been farmed using organic principles for over 20 years under the guidance of its current owner, Paul Champoux. Paul works closely with wineries to grow fruit to their specifications, resulting in many of Washington's greatest wines. And thanks to Powers' close ties to local premium growers like Paul, they were able to harness this top quality fruit for this stunning Reserve wine. Expect concentrated layers of rich, dark berries punctuated by hints of cedar, espresso, leather and liquorice.

The Winemaker

Irving Mendoza
Winemaker:

Irving Mendoza

With nearly nine years of experience in the wine industry, Irving Mendoza embodies a journey of dedication and expertise. Beginning as a cellar worker, Irving cultivated a deep understanding of winemaking, steadily advancing to the role of Assistant Winemaker and ultimately Winemaker in 2023. Under the mentorship of two predecessors, he honed his craft and mastered every facet of wine production from grape to bottle. Now at the helm as the winemaker, Irving Mendoza continues to blend passion with precision, crafting wines that reflect both tradition and innovation.

"We have been fortunate to work with Champoux Vineyard fruit since 1992 and we believe it is the most intense and one of the most expressive vineyard sites in Washington State. The grapes were harvested from late September to late October with near perfect acidity and fruit flavours. We used the pump-under fermentation process with PDM yeast to enhance the nice richness you would expect from Champoux Vineyard. The wine was then aged for 32 months in 55% new French oak barrels, 25% in second fill along with the last 20% in neutral French oak barrels. Alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% each of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec are also used." - Irving Mendoza, Winemaker.
