Region:Rhône - Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Brother and sister team Pierre and Marie Giraud are making big and characterful wines, where the accent is on bold fruit flavours and full ripeness. This is an extraordinary cuvée of Grenache, named after their father Pierre. It comes from very old vines grown on sand at La Crau and Pignam, near to Rayas and next to Clos des Cailloux. These vines produce very low yields with concentrated flavours, which result in a truly sensational wine. It has volume and power, yet it still has elegance and finesse. It will be right at home next to confit of lamb or strong cheeses.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Francois and Marie Giraud
Francois and Marie Giraud are a brother and sister team who are relative newcomers to winemaking in comparison to many of their neighbours. Their family have always lived in the Rhône, but were distillers rather than winemakers. It was their parents who got hold of some vines in 1974 and changed their family's trajectory, and in 1998 Francois and Marie took over the Domain. They focus on each plot in turn, creating some of Châteauneuf's most elegant and precise wines.
"Lovely garnet colour with crimson edges. Its powerful nose is reminiscent of basalt, tobacco leaf with cooked fruit notes and juicy prunes. Powerful structured palate, rich and rounded with flavours of fresh strawberry compote, raspberries, cherries tinged with thyme, wild juniper and violet rockrose." - Francois and Marie Giraud, Winemakers.
