It's not widely known that the carbonic maceration technique (more commonly associated with the bright and jolly Beaujolais style) is actually very traditional in Rioja. We associate Rioja with big, heavy reds, and it's no surprise as that's the style that most often graces our homes and dinner tables with its presence in favour of the brighter and lighter carbonica style. Abel's a purist and works in a traditional way so the Jarrate is the typical expression of what the locals drink!
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Abel Mendoza
Modest and passionate about his vineyards, Abel Mendoza and his wife Maite Fernández have been making understated wines in San Vicente de la Sonsierra (which is situated towards the border of Rioja Alta and Alavesa) since 1988. Each plot is cared for independently and harvested entirely by hand. The grapes planted are all indigenous including Malvasia, Viura, Tempranillo, Graciano and Garnacha Blanco. His wines could be described as modern in style as he only uses French oak and ages the wines for shorter periods than is traditional in Rioja. This is so he can express the fruit and the soil - he does not want to stamp the wines with any particular style or mark of his own other than his respect for the very natural quality of the grapes and for the magical places that they were grown.
"Made by carbonic maceration, actually quite traditional for young Rioja but it's a style that never really made it to the UK. It just makes for a slightly more aromatic, friendly wine." Alex Davies, Wine Buyer.
