Winemaking in Portugal can be dated back to around the 5th century BC, but these days you might be forgiven for thinking that it is better known for Port rather than still table wines. However with a diverse climate and a new focus on modern winemaking techniques we're starting to see a lot more exciting wines like Casal Sobreiro Tinto hit our shores. This is a clever fellow and it will turn you on to modern Portuguese reds in a moment!
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Mauro Azoia
Mauro's father was a wine producer, driven by the conviction that wine is made in the vineyard and a desire to work in partnership with the land and the vine. This conviction has become a bedrock of Mauro's foundation, and it came as little surprise to his family when he decided to follow in his father's footsteps. Mauro often muses, "away from the winery I felt half a person, as if some vital part of me was missing". After graduating, Mauro travelled around the world to seek out new winemaking techniques, working with Kaleske's Wines in Australia, Indevin in New Zealand, Silver Oak Cellars in California, Saronsberg Estate in South Africa and Fayolle Fils & Fille in France. Since returning to his beloved country, Mauro has been named as one of the 5 best young winemakers in Portugal.
"Bright ruby colour with a mature bouquet. Red cherries, plums and spice abound from this medium bodied beauty." - Mauro Azoia, Winemaker.
