The Wine

Country of origin:

Spain

Region:

Cariñena

We had to bide our time while awaiting the release of the Pizo Gran Reserva. The Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo and Garnacha blend sits in fine oak barrels for three years before bottling, where it rests for a further two years allowing the complex flavours to meld together, ensuring a perfectly balanced, complex wine on release. Its firm flavours will stand up to powerfully flavoured food too, roast or grilled lamb in particular.

The Winemaker

Alvaro Campos
Winemaker:

Alvaro Campos

Álvaro Campos is the new winemaker at Bodegas Paniza, bringing a fresh perspective and innovative ideas and a solid track record in Spanish wine production. Despite his youth, he has garnered significant experience, working in various wine regions around his hometown in Valencia, including DO Valencia, DO Alicante, DO Utiel-Requena, and DO Manchuela. His versatility and expertise have seen him excel in both small, family-run wineries and larger operations, culminating in his current role at Bodegas Paniza. Here, he leverages his deep knowledge of grape varieties like Garnacha, Syrah, and Viura. Mentored by esteemed winemakers like Pedro Cárcel, Álvaro embodies the new wave of Spanish winemaking talent that has already made a significant mark on the industry.

"This Cabernet-led blend ages really well in oak. It picks up so many different aromas and flavours and after some more time in bottle, the flavours are in perfect harmony. It has power but is soft and approachable at the same time." - Alvaro Campos, Winemaker.

Worth paying a little more for the depth of colour and flavour- a deep but soft and smooth wine easy to drink on its own but an excellent accompaniment to a vegetable paella
