The Wine The Wine
Chile
Region:Cachapoal Valley
De Martino has embarked on a noble mission to rescue some of Chile's oldest bush vine vineyards from extinction. The Las Cruces ('the crosses') vineyard was planted in 1957 and the resulting wine is a blend of the whole harvest. The majority is Malbec with a quarter Carménère. We are truly lucky for all the work put in by these guys. Full and rich with layers of damson fruit and an almost crunchy mid palate. Drinking now but will happily cellar.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Marcelo Retamal
As winemaker at De Martino it is my role to fulfil their ambition to create wines that reflect their origin. Our philosophy is based on minimum intervention on single vineyards, including several organic and traditional winemaking methods. Wines are crafted with native yeast, balanced in alcohol and moderate oak (when needed) to preserve the essence of the vineyards. We are proud to be the first place Carménère producer, first South American Carbon Neutral winery, Chilean Wine Producer of the Year in 2005 & 2009 by IWSC and Chilean Winery of the Year 2011.
"These grapes come from a small vineyard of 2.8 hectares (6.9 acres) planted in 1956 and located in the Coastal Mountain Range, in Pichidegua. This vineyard is a field blend of approximately 75% Malbec and 25% Carménère, where the vines are dry farmed and planted on their original rootstock. The grapes were co-fermented after harvest and then aged in 5000-litre Austrian foudres for two years before bottling." - Marcelo Retamal, Winemaker.
