The Wine The Wine
France
Region:Bordeaux - Graves
The Welsh owners of this near organic estate on the beautiful banks of the Garonne have tried their utmost to produce wines expressing the best of the well-drained, mineral-rich Graves soil. This Rouge is carefully blended from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It's fruity and smooth with firm tannins and nice oak. Through age it's starting to show the peppery notes of classic Graves, with liquorice, pencil, dried herb and earthiness melding nicely with blackcurrant and red cherry fruit.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Sean and Nicola Allison
Château du Seuil was acquired by an entrepreneurial Welsh couple, Bob and Sue Watts in 1988. They renovated the Château, built a modern winery and re-established many of the old vineyards. From this point on, the wines became known for their very high quality and finesse. Today, their daughter Nicola Allison and her husband Sean have taken on the estate, following the traditions established by Nicola's parents. The estate comprises of 25 hectares, which includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carménère, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc vines. There are 15 hectares in the Graves appellation (which takes its name from the gravel soils) and 10 hectares in the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux appellation. The vines are managed following organic certification to achieve a healthy vineyard, whilst at the same time minimising the impact on the environment. Sean and Nicola are involved in every aspect of making their wines from the vineyards through to the final bottle. Extensive use is made of the best in traditional winemaking methods coupled with the advantages of modern technology.
The resulting wines are fruity, well balanced with integrated oak flavours and firm round tannins. Additionally, in recent years the wine has developed the peppery characteristics of a classic Graves red. The finished wine is aged in oak for up to 18 month prior to bottling. It is pleasing on the palate, fresh and has a complex aftertaste.
