The latest stunning creation from Germán and his team, fast becoming Chilean masters of the grape. There is a depth of fruit on the nose with the flavours all playing a black card - blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherries are all distinctly noticeable. With layers of vanilla spice and hints of mint mingle with the delicious, ripe black fruit, it's no wonder this vegan wine is so renowned. Everything is wrapped in a blanket of silky tannins. Echoes of the Bordeaux style, but with the thumping, fruit core only the best New World winemakers can produce.

Whereas a full-blooded Amarone is made completely from dried grapes, the L'Ornato is a blend of juice from dried grapes combined with their estate-level Corvinone, Corvina and Cabernet Sauvignon which are fermented more traditionally. The result is a really smooth, huge red with masses of cherry and blackcurrant fruit, complex spicy and herbal notes and possesses the spirit of a top-drawer Amarone, but at a snip of the price.

We had to bide our time while awaiting the release of the Pizo Gran Reserva. The Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo and Garnacha blend sits in fine oak barrels for three years before bottling, where it rests for a further two years allowing the complex flavours to meld together, ensuring a perfectly balanced, complex wine on release. Its firm flavours will stand up to powerfully flavoured food too, roast or grilled lamb in particular.

It will also cellar well for at least a decade leaving you, at the end (should you make it), with a much more gastronomic and complex beast. Try it (at any time) with rare beef.

Sadly, some wineries started bottling one-dimensional juice to meet demand, but Kahaka is from a winemaker with a superb pedigree and is a true expression of this premium nectar. It is fresh and lively with complex layers of flavours ranging from lime and cut grass, elderflower and wet stone, all the way through to mango and passionfruit. This is a perfect example of what Marlborough is really about.

This glorious white Rioja is made from a blend of Viura and Chardonnay grapes which are planted on calcareous soil (the terroir famous for producing top quality, long-lived whites in Burgundy and Champagne). Meticulous attention to detail was taken in the vineyard and then in the winery, culminating in 5 months in a mix of American and French oak barrels. The result is a white with plenty of vivacity, and rounded, rich flavours of butter, toast, nut, pear & baked red apples.
