Like the famous albacore tuna, the guys behind Albacore wines have endless energy and determination. Their niche is selecting the best grapes from individual regions and bringing them together seamlessly. This is a rich, smooth red, softened by age. It has pronounced notes of damson fruit with dark undertones, backed by classic mature notes of leather, chocolate box and spice. A beautiful comfort wine with an enveloping structure.

This might not be a famous combination of grape varieties, like Shiraz Cabernet or Cabernet Merlot, but it is one we think has a bright future ahead of it, especially out in the Western Cape. Working with Winemaker Ryno Booysen we settled on a split of 70% Shiraz and 30% Malbec, where each variety works together in perfect harmony and results in a black-fruit filled, spicy red with a full body and notes of blueberry and damson.

The catch-all Vin De France appellation can be much more than its somewhat lowly status might suggest! It is a truly exciting new wave of winemaking thinking and the wines labelled as Vin de France often have small parcels of wines that are from very lofty regions that we blend with great value base wines to delivery true value for money and of course bash the rule book about the head a little. This delicious Grenache led red has a lovely parcel of Syrah included in the blend and a very special splash of seriously rich and ripe Carignan that really sets this wine above its VDF status!
